Abstract
In the 750th year since his birth, this overview article considers the implications of Robert Bruce's mixed heritage, combining upbringing in and key formative influences from Anglo-Norman England, Lowland Scotland and the Gael of western Scotland and Ireland to explore how this forged a uniquely 'hybrid' career and path to the contested Scottish throne. Publication was in the end same day as acceptance of final draft as a commercial monthly magazine.
