Webster CW & Fussey P (2023) Data Protection and Digital Information Bill: Addressing Risks to Surveillance Oversight. Parliamentary Briefing CRISP.
Abstract
First paragraph:
Society is witnessing an unprecedented acceleration in the capability and reach of surveillance technologies. These technologies hold potential to enhance public safety yet also have the capacity for
enormous harm. The possibilities for advanced surveillance technologies, particularly its remote biometric forms such as facial recognition, create legitimate concerns over human rights and civic
freedoms. At the same time, many of the public safety claims for new surveillance technologies lack robust evidence and their potential negative effects remain unknown.
