First paragraph: The idea for a seminar series entitled Archaeologists and the Digital. Towards Strategies of Engagement (16 May 2011; Institute of Archaeology, UCL), which led to this volume, originated from a reflection on the necessity to look more widely at the 'mission' and research directions of Public Archaeology as a field of study.
