Abstract
Using small cages stocked with rainbow trout, the effects of locomotor activity on water dispersion within the cage in lentic conditions were examined utilising dyes. Dye dispersion within stocked cages was found to increase several-fold depending upon the activity pattern of the fish, and it is clear that transmission rate in low-flow conditions is greatly enhanced. Motor-induced water exchange rates of up to 2 m3 min-1 were demonstrated in 1-m3 cages stocked with rainbow trout at 13.5 kg m-3.
