Abstract
1. Resting respiratory rate of Oreochromis nihticus (L.), was investigated using a six-channel microcomputer-operated respirometer. The construction and calibration of the apparatus is described. 2. A photoperiod-mediated respiratory cycle was demonstrated in which respiratory rate was higher during the light period than during darkness. 3. Exposure to constant light did not affect the cyclic respiratory rhythm over a 7-day period. Constant darkness depressed but did not remove the rhythm. 4. The magnitude of the respiratory cycle even after statistical smoothing of the data, was ±20% of the mean rate. It is suggested that such rhythmic activity could account for the wide variation in published respiratory data.
