Abstract
This entry describes the history and aesthetic concerns of the Brazilian cinema nôvo movement, active from the 1950s to the 1970s. It discusses some of the most important directors and works of the movement and outlines its development across four cycles of film production: the favela cycle, the sertão cycle, the city power film cycle and the tropicalist cycle.
