Research (1)

My research interests are varied but focus on the implications of change in the retail sector. My current work includes:

i) A longitudinal study of changes in shopping centres in Singapore. In particular, this is looking at the impact of different ownership and management arrangements on the composition of a set of shopping centres over time. This will include a comparison of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the makeup of those centres.

ii) An examination of the social role played by strata malls in Singapore. The suggestion is that these "city rooms" evoke a sense of place and provide a focus for interactions that is at odds with the desire for retail spaces to be used solely for economic or 'planned' entertainment purposes.

iii) A research project funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh that is exploring the importance of the informal food economy to Scottish island communities. This builds on work that colleagues and I have carried out over recent years on community retailing and local cooperatives.

iv) A micro-locational study of an extreme weather event, in this case the impact on the retail sector of flash-flooding episodes in the city of Stirling. The immediate outcome involved the closure of some businesses and significant disruption to the operations of other retailers. Yet, a detailed survey of the city centre shows the micro-locational differences in which subtle changes in the site, the design of the store or of its neighbours, and even the location of street furniture, affected the impact on each retailer. The study will also consider the consequences of the event for the resilience of those same retailers as there were three instances of flash flooding in the city centre in just four years. Retailers are drawing on their experiences to make small but significant changes to their operations but there are concerns over the likely responses from other organisations in their operating environment, such as the local council and their insurers.
