About me

Richard Kilborn is an Honorary Professor in the Division. He taught in the Department of Film, Media & Journalism from 1982 to 2008 and played a leading role in developing the Film & Media Studies programme at Stirling. He has twice been Head of Department. Richard has had a particular interest in the establishment of exchange programmes and collaborative partnerships with other European institutions. Currently he is the Stirling representative in a consortium of European universities that organizes an annual two-week summer school for doctoral students working in the media and communications area. His main research interests are in film and television documentary. Working together with two German colleagues he has recently completed a project that explored the ways in which documentary and dramatic elements are combined in various types of TV ‘docu-fiction'. The findings of this research are published in Spiel mit der Wirklichkeit (see below). His essay "Documentary Voices" exploring the British docu-soap phenomenon appeared in Brian Winston's edited volume The BFI Documentary Companion in the summer of 2013. He is one of the co-editors of the recently published volume Media Practice and Everyday Agency in Europe, edition lumiere, Bremen 2014, co-edited by Leif Kramp et al (available at: http://www.ecrea.eu/publications/researching-teaching-communication-series) Teaching As well as contributing to the undergraduate and postgraduate programme at Stirling, he has also taught at the Film School in Munich and at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University (Chicago). Currently he is involved in supervising the dissertations of a group of Vietnamese students who are completing a Masters degree in Media and Communications Management.

Research

His publications cover a wide range of topics, but have mainly focused on television drama, the media of the German-speaking countries and on film and television documentary (including recent developments in factual TV entertainment). Since the early 1990s Richard has been closely associated with the international documentary conference 'Visible Evidence'. He has also given papers or organized panels at many other conferences that focus on documentary and factual TV programming. He has written and edited several books, including: The Multi-Media Melting Pot (Comedia, 1985) Television Soaps (Batsford, 1992) An Introduction to Television Documentary: Confronting Reality (Manchester University Press, 1997) with John Izod Staging the Real: Factual TV Programming in the Age of Big Brother (Manchester University Press, 2003) Taking the Long View: A Study of Longitudinal Documentary (Manchester University Press, 2010) Critical Perspectives on the European Mediasphere (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, 2011) co-edited with Ilija Tomanic Trivundza, Nico Carpentier et al Spiel mit der Wirklichkeit: Zur Entwicklung doku-fiktionaler Formate in Film und Fernsehen (UVK Verlagsgesellschaft, 2012) with Kay Hoffmann and Werner Barg Media Practice and Everyday Agency in Europe (edition lumiere, Bremen 2014), co-edited with Leif Kramp, Nico Carpentier
