Abstract
First paragraph: German Unification has been much more painful than many Germans - both East and West - expected. A little over two years after the elation of November 1989 the mood has changed to one of widespread gloom at the social and economic price that is having to be paid. In particular, many people in the former GDR (now referred to as the 'five new Bundeslander;) regard unification as little more than an act of colonisation or annexation. As they see it, virtually everything in East Germany has been absorbed into, or made to conform with, the West German social, cultural and politico-economic system. Scant respect has been given to the 40 or so years of separate development which the old GDR had gone through.
