Brian Johnston. Director of Initial Teacher Education, Lecturer in Education, Education Division, Faculty of Science, University of Stirling.
Brian is Director of Initial Teacher Education, Lecturer in Education, and subject lead for English and literacy. His research interests include dialogic education, in particular philosophy with children and practical philosophy. He is also interested in children and young people’s voice and participation, citizenship and how these areas overlap to promote notions of agency.
A key feature of Brian’s work is that he enjoys collaborating with practitioners. He has led knowledge exchange programmes, working with schools and RICs, focusing on teacher professional enquiry and the use of Professional Learning Communities as a vehicle to bring about pedagogical change.
Prior to joining the University of Stirling, Brian gained significant school and leadership experience in Secondary schools working latterly as Principal Teacher of Literacy and Network Lead for English and Literacy with his previous local authority. He is also an experienced Senior Examiner for SQA and is currently Senior Team Leader for National 5 English.
