Abstract
First paragraph: Piecing together an accurate picture of European ‘resistance’ to German or Italian occupation during the Second World War is fraught with difficulties. What kinds of activities should be included under the term ‘resistance’? How are we to reconstruct activities that were by their very nature, secret? How should we gauge the importance of the various resistance movements? The two books under review each address these problems from a different perspective, and each, in its way, sheds valuable light on this important aspect of the Second World War.
