Abstract
First paragraph: In this article I would like to go back to a rather fundamental question: the question how we might best understand the idea and ideal of democracy. Some might argue that there is no need to go back to this question because we already know what democracy is or should be. At the end of history, so we were told about a decade ago, there is only one viable form of democracy left, viz., liberal democracy (Fukuyama, 1992). But the triumph of liberal democracy has been short-lived and from where we stand today the end of history seems a long time ago.
