Abstract
Memory of past experiences of pain may affect patients' judgement of their current condition & decisions about future healthcare interventions. This study investigated memory for acute pain using the 'remember/know' research paradigm. This allowed participants to indicate whether their recollections reflected clearly remembered aspects of pain, their earlier reports of the pain, or that they simply knew they had experienced pain. Retrospective reports were consistent with those made while the pain was experienced.
