Abstract
First paragraph: Scotland, in common with most developed legal systems, has long had a host of mechanisms aimed at protecting children from abuse and neglect. The Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was founded in 1885 and, while this organization still fulfills an invaluable role in child protection, overall responsibility for this task has long since passed to various organs of the state.
