Abstract
In 1980 the Retail Enquiry noted 2 368 000 employees. Though the figure provided by the 1981 Census of Employment (1 863 000) is lower, this excludes self-employed and under counts casual employment. For a variety of reasons, retail employment has been severely cut back but, despite this downward trend, the decline is not so great as in other sectors of the economy.
