Abstract
Nigel Kneale's Quatermass serials-and their movie remakes-were sophisticated explorations of science fiction tropes. His allegories of the British condition rely on the ancient and the contemporary, on historical and psychoanalytical discourses, and the battle between scientific rationalism and mythic primitivism. Ahead of its time, Kneale's work still demands wider exposure.
