Abstract
This article considers the prevalence of ideas of sovereignty and authority in seventeenth century Scotland with particular regard to parliament, the monarchy, the constitutional balance between he two, and the use of symbolism by both to place theese institutions at the centre of early modern political and cultural life in Scotland
