Abstract
The article is a critical discussion of Charles Travis's article 'A Sense of Occasion' which appeared in the same issue of The Philosophical Quarterly.Travis promotes a conception of knowledge on which all knowledge depends on having proof. Though sympathetic to his project the present discussion gives reasons for doubting that his appeal to the notion of occasion-sensitivity helps to make the conception plausible.
