Abstract
First paragraph: This article sets out to discuss the relationship between theory and practice in the context of modem languages teaching. It does so in the light of recent trends in Communicative Language Teaching and the way it is interpreted in modem languages classrooms. It argues that theoretical discussion is a necessary part of resisting the excesses of methodological fashions, and, therefore, has a central role to play in initial and continuing professional development. The issues raised are pertinent to recent discussion coming from the Teacher Training Agency on the place of theory and research in classroom practice and the need to develop teachers with their own research agenda.
