Abstract
First paragraph: The purpose of this paper is to consider the role of the financial sector in economic development, with particular reference to banking. The aim is to draw some conclusions of relevance to the development of the financial sector in Central and Eastern Europe, in the context of the process of financial integration in Europe. The focus is on the economic role of banks, their relationship with central banks, and the theoretical perspective to be employed in order to derive policy conclusions.
