Abstract
Objective. Growing international interest in self-esteem research and awareness of its relevance to human well-being and motivation has led to new opportunities to evaluate the cross-national and cross-cultural generalizability of self-esteem measurement, theory, and research ( Marsh, 2001). Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to evaluate a Turkish translation of the CY-PSPP.
Method. Following standard procedures for item translation, data were collected from a large sample of Turkish adolescents. Data were analyzed primarily using confirmatory analytic procedures to assess factorial validity and gender invariance for measurement and theoretical models.
Results. The a priori specified measurement model employing the standard six-item subscales was found to be untenable in confirmatory modelling. Five- and four-item per subscale measurement models identified by iteratively removing single items featuring relatively weak loadings, troubling residual patterns, and/or high modification index values resulted in a satisfactory solution. Descriptive statistics and scale intercorrelations were largely consistent with previous findings, but some interesting differences between Turkish and Western extant data emerged.
Conclusions. This initial study provided some evidence of potential factorial validity for a Turkish translation of the CY-PSPP albeit not in the full translated six-item per subscale measurement model. Further evaluation of the translated scales is warranted in order to ascertain the robustness of the findings reported in this investigation.
