Abstract
First paragraph: The application of self-presentational theoretical perspectives to the study of behavior in sport and exercise settings has undergone a recent surge in interest (e.g., Crawford & Eklund, 1994; Eklund & Crawford, 1994; Martin & Mack, 1996; McAuley, Bane, & Mihalko, 1995; McAuley, Bane, Rudolph, & Lox, 1995; McAuley & Burman, 1993; Spink, 1992). Social physique anxiety, the dispositional tendency to become apprehensive about having one's body negatively evaluated in social settings (Hart, Leary, & Rejeski, 1989), has been a central construct in these investigations.
