Abstract
This article sketches an approach to professional development that draws on post‐structuralism and, in particular, the notion of discourse. It suggests that such an approach can help to overcome divisions between theory and practice and also some of the limitations of the notion of the professional as reflective practitioner. The argument is illustrated through a case study of professional development in guidance and counselling in the context of the UK.
