Abstract
The American Gothic is often a source of wicked delight as much as it is of genuine horror. The Gothic and the Carnivalesque in American Culture explores why the American genre returns to the wicked carnival, and how it facilitates an immersive and naughty experience for readers. The book describes this tradition of carnivalesque reading in the American genre from the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, from Edgar Allan Poe through H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, EC and Warren comics, television shows such as Thriller and Night Gallery, Stephen King, and into the Gothic uses of goth subculture.
