Abstract
Taken from the article: The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness of a randomised controlled trial that has been funded by the Medical Research Council and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages encountered in running multi-centre trials. The aim of the trial is to determine whether surgical stabilisation of the spine (by fusion or ligamentous stabilisation) is more or less effective in achieving relief of symptoms than an intensive rehabilitation programme.
