Abstract
The article discusses how the Gothic in Spanish film is not simply a phenomenon of the contemporary era but has roots in earlier cinema of the Franco regime and the Transition in Spain, as well as in Gothic film more widely. It considers in particular the films El espíritu de la colmena (Sprit of the Beehive), La residencia (The Boarding School) and Tras el cristal (Though a Glass Darkly).
