Rennick S (2024) How tropes about women in video games go beyond the game. [TEDx Talk, Youtube Video] 21.05.2024. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrQig3XVfoE
Abstract
At TEDx Vitoria-Gasteiz, Steph Rennick discusses the pervasive tropes in video games that impact the representation of women, noting that female characters are less likely to be protagonists, are often sexualized, and frequently perpetuate harmful stereotypes. The talk emphasizes the importance of identifying and subverting these tropes to allow a greater diversity of heroes to emerge and to advance the narrative inclusion in video games. Rennick argues that while progress has been made, much remains to be done to ensure equal and respectful representation in gaming worlds, which are still more restrictive for women and other minorities than the real world.
