Abstract
First paragraph: In this chapter we draw on the past difficulties following deindustrialisation, including the demise of the mining sector, in Scotland, UK. We illustrate the role of digital opportunities in the green transition and new job creation that were not available in the past. We also discuss the role of skills escalator models as a potential tool in mapping opportunities for digital skills development. These models present different qualification levels and alternative routes to reach them, so as to reflect different career-related needs and individual circumstances.
