Abstract
The computations performed by cortico-cortical and cortico-cerebellar circuits are argued to support psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying distinct types of language change. Associative cortico-cerebellar computations participate in idiomatization, coalescence, and metonymic inferencing, while categorical cortico-cortical ones underlie schematization, analogical reanalysis, and metaphorical extension. The paper contributes to the much-needed construction of a neurolinguistics of language change.
