Abstract
First paragraph: Since Horace's famous ut pictura poesis, artists, writers and theorists have explored the various implications concerning the compatibility of literature and the visual arts and their respective representations of reality, and have reached many different conclusions. Some, adapting Horace's aphorism to their own purposes, believe that an exchange takes place. Others consider that these two domains are in no way equivalent, as, for example, when Lessing affirms in Laocoon that painting is essentially a spatial art whilst poetry can only represent the temporal.
