Abstract
Background:
The NHS Bowel Scope Screening (BSS) programme offers individuals
aged 55 a once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) examination, a test that
can help reduce bowel cancer incidence and mortality.
Benefits of BSS are contingent on uptake. Analyses of the first 14
months of roll-out indicates uptake to be 43%.
Patient navigation (PN) involves trained individuals
giving tailored one-to-one support to patients to
overcome barriers preventing them from accessing
healthcare.
PN has been shown to increase cancer screening
uptake in the US, including breast and bowel
cancer screening.
