Abstract
First paragraph: The ballad is by no means the sole property of Scotland, but it is rooted deeply in Scottish popular culture: in the hills of the Borders, the fishing villages of the northeast, the berry fields of Perthshire, the broadside collections of the national archives, and the venues of Glasgow's Celtic Connections folk festival. Its significance for Scotland has been documented over centuries.
