Abstract
First paragraph: The theme which arguably emerges most strikingly from many of the items in this Stewart Dynasty special issue of History Scotland is the intensifying capacity of that monarchical house to project its regal and political image. At first, this might seem always to remain a cheaper, less-convincing imitation of English, French or Burgundian courtly and royal achievements in art, architecture, literature and military technology. However, as recent reconstructions from the historical, material and archaeological record have shown, the Stewarts inherited and continued to develop a sophisticated and multi-layered language of royal power and prestige, reaching both a domestic and, increasingly, an international audience
