I am a conservation scientist and advise WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) on surveys, monitoring and general science in Central Africa. My expertise covers survey methodologies, wildlife abundance and distribution, wildlife ecology and protected area management. I have published over 80 peer-reviewed papers, 40 book chapters, and over 60 IUCN Red List Assessments. Posts held in the past and to date include: membership of the Scientific Commission of UNEP-GRASP (Great Apes Survival Partnership) 2007-2014, IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group 2007- present; IUCN Great Ape Section Executive Committee 2013-present; IUCN Red Colobus Network 2020-present; IUCN African Elephant Specialist Group 2011-present; and IUCN Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group 2017- present. I was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2013. I was Hon. Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh 1989-2007 and then at the University of Stirling 2008-2016.
