I am a Lecturer in Molecular Exercise Physiology at the University of Stirling. My teaching duties cover a range of modules on the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science programme, and I coordinate the Human Anatomy and Physiology module studied in year 2.
I originally studied for an HND in Fitness Health and Exercise before progressing to a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science at Edinburgh Napier University. This was followed by time at Liverpool John Moores University completing a masters in Sports Physiology and PhD investigating injuries in youth football. I then completed a 1-year postdoc at Manchester Metropolitan University investigating molecular biomarkers of concussion.
During the COVID-19 pandemic I worked for Public Health Scotland managing and analysing population data on the impact of the pandemic and vaccination rollout, leading to several publications. I then held a role analysing health board data on child and maternal health, before joining the University of Stirling in April 2023.
I also have applied experience working in health and fitness, private healthcare, and sport atboth the youth and elite level.
My research interests include sport and exercise genomics, the role of mirco-RNAs in skeletal muscle physiology, exercise responders/non-responders, physiology of team sports (particularly football), concussion, exercise for the prevention and management of sarcopenia, the use of big data to predict exercise responsiveness, and high vs moderate intensity exercise training. I am also interested in all aspects of cellular and molecular physiology and how this relates to exercise adaptation.
