Research

Damian's current research expertise includes International Law, Human Rights Implementation, UN Human Rights Bodies, African Human Rights system, International criminal law and Transitional Justice. He publishes in the areas of international human rights law and transitional justice. His book - The Human Rights Council: The Impact of the Universal Periodic Review in Africa (Routledge 2020), examines the engagement of African states with the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism. This book offers the first detailed analysis of the effectiveness of African states’ engagement with the UPR mechanism from 2008 -2019 and its potential impact. Damian develops in this book a framework which comprehensively evaluates aspects of states’ UPR engagement, considers the potential for acculturation in their engagement with the UPR and unpacks the impact of politics, regionalism, cultural relativism, rights ritualism and civil society on the UPR process.

Damian is one of three founding Coordinators of the international network of UPR Academic Researchers (UPRAN), together with Academics at BCU Centre for Human Rights' UPR Project at Birmingham City University. The UPR Academic Network (UPRAN) is an international network of global scholars working on the UN's Universal Periodic Review. UPRAN members range from PhD students through to very experienced scholars. It is a network of researchers and academics working on the UPR and coming together to share their expertise as well as foster international and interdisciplinary collaborations.
