About me

The aim of my research is to improve public health by engaging stakeholders and the public with the air they breathe.

Biography

•Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography (2015 onwards; University of Stirling)

•Postdoc on the EPSRC project Energy for Development (2014 – 2015; Southampton University)

•Postdoc on the NERC/DFID (UPGro) project Groundwater 2030 (2014; Southampton University)

•Postdoc on the EU FP7 project TRANSPHORM (Traffic-related air pollution and health) (2011 – 2014; University of Hertfordshire)

•PhD in Air Pollution and Health (2007 – 2011; Cardiff University)

•BSc. (hons; 1st class) Environmental Geoscience (2004-2007; Cardiff University)

The aim of my research is to find new and creative ways to reduce environmental pollution and improve public health.

I am an interdisciplinary researcher, combining a background in environmental science with more recent research experience in geography, social science and arts & humanities. I lead and contribute to inter- and trans-disciplinary projects which place people at their heart, using a variety of methods and approaches to engage people in the research process including co-creation, citizen science, participatory and creative methods. My current research projects are based in the UK and Africa.

Other Project

The impact of air pollution on bee cognition (Co-I)

Funded by the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), this interdisciplinary project is exploring the impacts of air pollution on bee cognition using case study sites across central Scotland.

Forth-ERA (Air Quality Co-lead)
https://www.stir.ac.uk/…about-forth-era/
The Forth Environmental Resilience Array (Forth-ERA), funded through the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, is a living laboratory providing environmental data and analytics. It aims to facilitate world-leading scientific research, promote more efficient environmental management and regulation, and stimulate business innovation in support of Scotland’s transition to a net zero carbon society. The Forth-ERA air quality objectives include to: 1) Deploy a co-designed (with stakeholders) indoor (n = ~100 sensors) and outdoor (n = 20 sensors) air quality monitoring network in Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire; 2) Explore community air quality priorities using online participatory approaches and use this as the basis for deploying sensors (n = 10) that address their priorities; 3) Create an online digital repository for air quality data, presented in meaningful ways for a variety of stakeholders (e.g., local authorities, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), community groups and the public); 4) Identify and explore ways to use the collected air quality data to support policy and behaviour changes.
