About me

I qualified as a solicitor, specialising in commercial property law before joining the University in 2003 to help develop the Stirling Law School. I have been Head of Law and Deputy Head of the Division of Law and Philosophy since November 2015 and am Director of our LLB Programmes. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and won the student led Recognising Achievement in Teaching Excellence (RATE) award for Teaching Excellence in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in 2015.

Teaching I have considerable experience in curriculum and assessment design, having designed degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as courses within those programmes. I am the author of two student textbooks in contract law: Scottish Contract Law Essentials and Contract Law Essential Cases (see Outputs). My aim is always to ensure that courses are academically rigorous but also deliver skills sought after by employers. I deliver presentation training to students, arrange court visits and write a weekly student newsletter which always includes advice on careers and employability. Most recently, I developed a course on commercial awareness after it was highlighted as a skills shortage by 67% of employers surveyed by the Association of Graduate Recruiters. This course introduces students to two sides of commercial awareness: (1) law as a business in its own right and (2) the commercial realities faced by business clients.I am a SFELTE (Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Excellence) Mentor in the University.

My current teaching is in : Property Law Contract Law Commercial Awareness in Law Dissertation supervision
