A 32-year careeer in local authority justice social work as a practitioner and manager, latterly managing a multi-disciplinary - social work and medical - team providing drug treatment to people in the justice system. In 2023 moved into full-time research to undertake PhD examining the impact of human rights approaches to supervising people in the community in the context of the justice system in Scotland
