About me

I have been a lecturer in soil science at Stirling University since 2008 and senior lecturer since 2016. I teach a range of subjects linked to soil management and as an Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching I oversee the quality assurance of our teaching provision and provide strategic leadership on enhancing the student experience and developing student outcomes.

My research focuses on soil resilience and soils’ response to disturbance across seasonal to millennial timescales. My work explores the microscales relevant to soil processes and seeks to link these to soil function across landscapes. This enables me to understand past land management practices and explore the legacy of past human activity as it influences soil function today.

My research focuses on soil resilience and soils’ response to disturbance across timescales that span from seasonal to millennial. I work from the microscale at which soil processes operate and seek to link these to changes in soil function at landscape scales. This enables me to understand past land management practices and explore the legacy of past human activity as it influences soil function today.

My research aims to:

  • understand how soils respond to anthropogenic and natural disturbance.
  • reconstruct and understand the impacts of past land management and human activity from the physical and chemical retained in cultural soils today,
  • recognise the implications of past soil management as it affects human health and environmental sustainability today.
