Experience a taste of Japan at the University of Stirling

The University of Stirling is hosting a programme of events in celebration of Japan and its culture. Members of the community, students and staff are invited to join in a wide range of activities from Sunday 21 February to Thursday 25 February.

The University’s Japan Week, now in its fourth year, offers an eclectic week of events including lectures, films, workshops and displays. These include performances of traditional Japanese arts such as the tea-ceremony and ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), as well as language classes, a calligraphy workshop and an evening of music with Tatsuya Yamauchi and friends.

Professor Darren Ashmore, Professor of Anthropology and Director of Japan Studies, iCLA, Yamanashi Gakuin University, Japan, will give a keynote lecture on Tuesday 23 February. In his lecture, Professor Ashmore will provide an introduction to Japan through anime and pop culture. 

Stirling has well-established links with Japan, with many student exchanges, summer schools and research collaborations. Japanese students will also be contributing to the week by helping to run workshops along with the artists and experts.

Professor Gerry McCormac, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Stirling, said: “Japan Week provides a fantastic opportunity to celebrate strong links between Japan and the University and provides students, staff and the community a chance to get involved and learn about Japanese culture and traditions.

“This year we have so much going on, from active workshops and a tea-ceremony to live music, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the celebrations.”
