Maitland's Story
A retired police officer and a father of three, Maitland is a BA (Hons) Politics graduate.
“I had always wanted to go to university. However, I chose to join the Police Force instead.
“From the Access Course, I progressed to a degree in Scottish Politics. The University of Stirling’s modular system of learning offers a wide range of subjects to study, allowing a student to change degrees if required. By the end of my second year, I had moved on to an honour’s degree in Politics.
“Having graduated with a BA (Hons) Politics degree, the natural progression for me was to apply for a Master's degree in International Conflict and Cooperation.
“I owe my achievements to the Access Course. It is the building block for your academic journey. It gives you the opportunity for personal development, to move forward through your chosen degree with confidence, a confidence you may not have had if you had taken a more conventional route to education.
“The Access Course has not only given me the opportunity and the ability to start and finish a degree, but it has also given me a passion for helping other students. I am hoping my future lies within the Scottish Wider Access Programme, where I can help students to do as I have done, helping them reach their full potential.”
