Thuthukile's Story
Having lost his father at the age of 18, Thuthukile Khumalo concedes that he hasn’t had the easiest of lives – but says he has enjoyed academic success thanks to the drive of his mother.
“I lost my father when I was studying my A-levels and I did not imagine that one day I would be graduating,” said the Zimbabwean. “I am grateful to my mother who never gave up pushing my dream to be an academic achiever.”
As a parent himself, Thuthukile faced challenges balancing childcare and family with his studies, but appreciated the University’s flexibility. He also identifies the support of staff, family and close friends – and the on-campus sports facilities – as being important in looking after his own mental wellbeing and in achieving his degree.
During his three years at Stirling, Thuthukile participated in an exchange programme in Florida, where he learned about the delivery of healthcare in the United States.
Thuthukile, 41, who has now started an MSc Advancing Practice at Stirling, added: “I am proud of this degree as it has given me so much satisfaction and passion – it reminds me that no mountain is too high to climb, as long as one is dedicated and determined.”
