H H Donnelly House refurbishment

Works have commenced on a £7.5 million project to modernise H H Donnelly House student accommodation.

The refurbishment programme includes the replacement of the building’s roof, windows, kitchens and bathrooms to further enhance sustainable accommodation for our students.

Energy efficiency measures, including cavity wall insulation and solar panels, will be implemented, contributing to the University’s target of achieving net zero by 2040, alongside new lighting and fire alarm systems.

Internal areas, including H H Donnelly House’s 127 bedrooms, will be refreshed, with new flooring, decoration, fixtures and furniture.

The outside of the building will also be improved, with the external cladding renewed and the blockwork cleaned.

The works, carried out by Auchterarder-based firm Hadden Group, will be fully funded by a loan from the Scottish Funding Council’s Route to Net Zero Carbon programme.

The project is part of the University’s ongoing commitment to improving its accommodation portfolio and follows the £6.25 million renovation of Muirhead House, due to completed by the end of the year.

“We want our students to thrive during their studies and, to this end, are committed to providing accommodation that students feel comfortable in and can truly call home.

“The full refurbishing of H H Donnelly House will further improve the diversity and energy efficiency of quality student accommodation available at the University of Stirling.”

Professor Leigh Sparks, Deputy Principal (Education and Students)

"I am pleased to represent the student voice as a board member for the refurbishment of H H Donnelly House.

"I believe this project will bring improvements to affordable housing that will benefit students for years to come, and I’m excited to see it progress."

Union President for Stirling Students’ Union, Leen Ali

Students will not inhabit H H Donnelly House, located on the University campus, while works are undertaken and will return to the building when it reopens, in time for the autumn 2025 semester.

Disruption to the University community will be minimal during the works. Traffic will be largely unaffected, however there may be localised, minimal disruption on occasion. A section of the Andrew Stewart Hall car park, opposite H H Donnelly House, will be out of use for the duration of the project.
