REF 2029 at Stirling

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It first took place in 2014 and then again in 2021. The next exercise is planned for 2029, and we will need to make our submission at the end of 2028.

What is REF 2029?

The rationale for REF is to:

  • Provide accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment;
  • Provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks, for use in the higher education sector and for public information;
  • Inform the selective allocation of funding for research, referred to as quality-related funding in Scotland.

The exercise is divided into three elements:

  • People, Culture and Environment
  • Contribution to Knowledge
  • Engagement and Impact

Our REF 2029 preparations and submission are governed by a Code of Practice developed in consultation with staff.
