University of Stirling swimmers Duncan Scott and Jack McMillan have won Olympic gold for Team GB in Paris - after a phenomenal showing in the Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay.

Scott - who swam the final alongside James Guy, Tom Dean and Matt Richards - put in a brilliant last leg performance to see off the United States in second and Australia in third. It is the first time a British relay quartet have retained an Olympic title in swimming or athletics.

McMillan, from Northern Ireland, received gold after swimming the heats earlier in the day - helping the team qualify for the final with the fastest qualifying time.

It is Scott's seventh Olympic medal - after winning two silvers at Rio 2016 and a gold and three silvers at Tokyo 2021. Only cyclists Sir Jason Kenny and Sir Bradley Wiggins are ahead of Scott in terms of total medals on the British list.

It is McMillan's first Olympic medal.

In the final, the impressive efforts of Guy, Dean and Richards gave Scott a marginal lead going into the last leg. Scott refused to give any hope to the chasing pack - powering through the final 200 metres with the quickest individual time of the entire field, recording a 1:43:95.

Team GB sealed the win with a time of 6:59.43, ahead of United States (7:00.78) and Australia (7:01.98).
