Former Open Champion, Paul Lawrie, was at the University of Stirling this week for a special masterclass with the University’s scholar golfers.

Ryder Cup player and European Tour winner, Lawrie, spent the day working with University of Stirling High Performance Golf Coach, and former Tour colleague, Dean Robertson, and the students at the University’s specialist practice facility before taking part in a Q&A session to give them an insight into life at the top of the game.

Commenting on his visit, Lawrie said: “It was nice to come down and see what the student athletes do and see the great job that Dean’s doing with the team. I haven’t played a lot of golf recently but Dean convinced me to bring the clubs along to get involved and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“Everything’s brilliant here and, with some of these guys possibly going on to play golf for a living, some of the specific work they do, and the way Dean is going about it, is phenomenal.”

Stirling’s High Performance Golf Coach, Dean Robertson, added: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Paul along today. His interactions with the players during the session were invaluable and we’re extremely thankful for him taking time out of his busy schedule. It’s been hugely inspirational and the students feel honoured and privileged to have spent this time with him in such a learned environment.”

Fourth-year golf scholar, Gemma Batty, agreed it was an inspiring day: “It was amazing to have someone with great depth of knowledge on the game and listen to experiences that have shaped his career. I felt Paul spoke with real passion and enthusiasm in a number of areas and the excitement he had talking about going back to full time training/playing on the Seniors tour shows that the desire and drive never goes away. We always want to be better!”
