The University of Stirling today announced the appointment of Fiona Sandford as its new Chair of Court.
A Stirling Economics graduate, originally from East Kilbride and now living in the Scottish Borders, Fiona Sandford has a distinguished career in higher education.
She will serve as the University’s new Chair of Court for a period of four years, with effect from 1 August 2015, when the current Chair, Alan Simpson, completes his term of office.
Ms Sandford held senior professional posts in University College London and the London School of Economics where she was Director of Careers Services for eight years.
From 2012-2014 she was Executive Director of Global Business Strategy and Careers at London Business School (LBS) developing key markets in China, the Middle East and Latin America.
Ms Sandford continues to work as a business consultant for LBS. She is also a trustee of the Thomas Wall Trust and a former member of the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee, Jeans for Genes Campaign and Primary Immunodeficiency Association.
Alan Simpson said: "We are delighted Fiona has agreed to take up the role of Chair of the University’s governing body. She brings with her a wealth of international experience in higher education and the business sector, and a huge enthusiasm for the future success of Stirling."
Accepting the appointment, Ms Sandford said: "I am thrilled to be joining my alma mater. Over the last fifty years Stirling has built a reputation founded on innovation and excellence. I look forward to making a positive contribution to the University’s continued success and to increase further its global impact on society."
University of Stirling Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerry McCormac said: "With her record of excellence in global higher education and business, Fiona is well-placed to take on the role of Chair. We are delighted Court has chosen to make this appointment and I look forward to working with Fiona as we seek to pursue the University’s ambitions."
The appointment of Ms Sandford was approved at a meeting of Court on Wednesday 6 May on the recommendation of the Chair Appointing Panel. It follows an extensive public recruitment exercise in line with the expectations of the Scottish Code of Good HE Governance.
The Chair of Court is responsible for the University’s mission, vision and strategy, and the welfare of students and staff. The Chair, who is independent from the University, will lead the Court in supporting the Principal and Vice-Chancellor in pursuing the University’s strategy and ensuring the highest standards of corporate governance are met.
