Commonwealth Games Gold and Bronze medallist Ross Murdoch has praised the support he received from the Winning Students sports scholarship programme, which is managed by the University of Stirling, at an event in Glasgow.

Winning Students is Scotland's sports scholarship programme supporting students competing in high performance sport, funded by the Scottish Funding Council. It supports talented young athletes to combining their studies and their sport, in 38 member colleges and universities across Scotland.

Ross Murdoch said: “Winning Students has been so beneficial to me. It’s really supported me and helped me combine studying at Stirling with my training and it’s great that it’s paid off for me at Glasgow 2014.”

74 Winning Students past and present, including Murdoch, are competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Humza Yousaf MSP, Minister for External Affairs and International Development also attended the event, remarking that the number of Winning Students athletes competing in Glasgow 2014 is testament to the success of the programme and thanking those who have contributed to Winning Students since its launch in 2008.

Winning Students scholarships are individually tailored to each athlete's needs, complementing existing support. Awarded annually, scholarships can value up to £5,500 each year. Across core sports and through Individual Scholarships, more than 150 student athletes are currently supported by Winning Students.
