Members of the public are invited to attend a lecture by Lord McConnell, Peacebuilding and Post-Conflict Reconstruction: THE Development Challenge of the 21st Century, on Tuesday 26 July at 6pm in Pathfoot lecture theatre.
Lord McConnell’s lecture will be the third annual International Summer School Lecture at the University, following last year’s presentation by Lord Robertson and the inaugural lecture by Jim Murphy MP in 2009.
Lord McConnell graduated from the University in 1983 in Mathematics and Education and was Student President, Deputy President of NUS Scotland and Honorary President of the University of Stirling.
He taught mathematics in Alloa in the 1980s and was a member of Stirling District Council. In 1999 he entered the Scottish Parliament and served as First Minister from 2001 until 2007, during which time he introduced the first smoking ban in public places in the UK and the Fresh Talent initiative.
In 2008, he received an honorary degree from the University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to public affairs and became Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale in 2010.
Every year, the International Summer School welcomes students from around the world to sample student life at Stirling while gaining transferable credits towards a degree in their home country.
If you would like to join the audience for Lord McConnell’s lecture, please email iss@stir.ac.uk . The lecture is free to all and all are welcome.
